Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the hiring of Brandon Johnson to the position of police officer effective October 18, 2021.
Background/Discussion
At the September 20, 2021, meeting, the City Council approved the position description for crime prevention
specialist and approved filling that position this budget year. The position will be filled with a current police
officer.
As discussed at the September 7, 2021, work session, we had a strong candidate pool from our recent recruitment
to backfill this officer position. Following interviews, background, physical, and psychological testing, we
recommend Brandon Johnson for this position.
Following his service in the U.S. Army, Officer Johnson earned his certificate from Le Cordon Bleu College of
Culinary Arts. He returned to school in 2013 to begin his law enforcement career. Working as a community
service officer for Brooklyn Center through school, Officer Johnson became a police officer for Brooklyn Center
following graduation in 2015. In 2018 he continued his law enforcement education and obtained his bachelor’s
degree in 2020.
Due to his experience and consistent with our union contract, Officer Johnson will start at step 2 of the union pay
scale. Provided successful performance he will move to step 3 after 6 months. He will receive his next step
increase at one year of employment. All other pay and benefits will be consistent with the union contract and city
policy.
