9 PRSR 01-12-2022 Memorandum To: Parks and Recreation Commission From: Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director Date: January 12, 2022 Subject: Director’s Report This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to recent collaborations, strategic planning, staff changes/developments, and park operations. Active Elk River - Orono Park & YAC The Orono Park picnic pavilion and restroom building roof was completed a few days before Christmas. The contractors will complete their work for the rest of the buildings in 2022. Athletic Field Utilization Study Staff is working on the work plan for an athletic field utilization study and would like a Parks Commission Athletic Field Utilization Committee work closely with staff to complete this project by October of 2022. A committee should consist of not more than three Commissioners. Senior Center Annual Report Attached is the annual report for the Senior Activity Center. The residency status for memberships is 79% Elk River. Please keep in mind the attendance totals are not accurate due to not everyone always checking in and frequent issues with the touch screen not working properly. Outdoor Ice Rinks With our first stretch of cold weather in mid-December, park maintenance was able to flood ice rinks. We were able to open Handke, Spectrum and the two neighborhood rinks just in time for Christmas. The ice rink warming house hours will open in two weeks. Hours will be Monday-Friday from 3-9 p.m. and weekends 2-9 p.m. Spectrum will be opening Jan 10. We hope to open Handke January 12, this may change based on staff availability. Item: 9 Senior Activity Center 2021 Year End Report January-May The Senior Activity Center was open with reduced hours and capacity limitations. Only a few activities and programs were able to take place. No card groups, trips, and events occurred during this time. June-December The Senior Activity Center opened to full capacity. Each month, more activities were offered as well as trips. Yearly Attendance: 7,394 Average Daily Attendance: 30 Total Number of Members: 470 Revenue from Membership: $10, 614 Total Number of Day Passes: 145 Revenue from Day Passes: $389 Trips Offered: 7 Presentations Offered: 42 Art Classes Offered:10 Special Events Offered: 39 (Entertainment, Tournaments, games with prizes) Virtual Activities Offered: 9 Weekly Ongoing Activities: 13 (Card groups, hobby groups, fitness classes) Demographics: Members Residency Status: 79% Elk River 7% Otsego 3% Zimmerman 3% Ramsey Average Age of Members: 74 # of Members over age 90: 16 # of Members age 55-60: 22 Gender: 57% Female 22% Male 21% Unknown
