Have Favor Ayumbu read his essay aloud to Mayor and Council. Mayor will then step down and present Favor
with a certificate of recognition.
Background/Discussion
The Mayor for a Day Essay Contest is sponsored by the League of Minnesota Cities. This was the ninth year for
the competition, and nearly 300 entries were submitted by 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from all areas of the state. A
total of three winners and four honorable mentions were chosen by judges from those entries.

Essays can be submitted online or using the form on page two (either handwritten or typed into the fil(able form).
should be no more than one page in length or about 125-300 words, and must answer the Following question:
Cities provide a variety of services and programs that make our lives better, including parks & rec,
street maintenance, water and sewer, libraries, police, fire, and more! if you were mayor for a day, what
would you do to make one of the services that your city provides evert better?
Three winners will be selected based on creativity, originality, ability to show a basic understanding of city services, and
legibility (if handwritten) and notified via email in early January. Each winner will receive a $1O0 prize. The winning essays
will also be published in the League's publication, Minnesota Cities magazine.
• Essays must be the original work of students residing in Minnesota who are in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade as of fall 2021.
• Mailed entries must be postmarked by Dec. 6, 2021 to:

• You may also email entries as an attachment by Dec. 6, 2021 to mayortoraday@lmc.org or submit your essay
at www.imc.org/mayorforaday.
