Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the hiring of Mason Gates to the position of part-time community service officer effective
June 7, 2022.
Background/Discussion
When CSO O’Konek was hired as a police officer we went to market to fill this position. After nearly having a
candidate hired, he withdrew due to family reasons. We went back to market and following interviews, background,
physical and psychological tests, we recommend Mason Gates for this position.
This position is intended for students working toward a career in law enforcement. The length of employment is
two years and may be extended one year by the police chief. Mr. Gates is a student at Aurora University and works
as a Lacrosse Official. He participated as a Police Explorer for the Maple Grove Police Department for four years.
This is a leave benefit earning position and Mr. Gates will start at step A of pay grade 6N. All pay and benefits will
be consistent with city policy.
