Recognition of the ERMU and MMUA Tom Bovitz Memorial Scholarship Award Winner

BACKGROUND:
At the April 12, 2022, commission meeting, it was announced that Elk River High School Senior
Brock Schmertman was selected as the local winner of ERMU’s $500 Tom Bovitz Memorial
Scholarship Award. His winning essay was forwarded to Minnesota Municipal Utilities
Association (MMUA) judges for a chance to win an additional award through their statewide
contest.
DISCUSSION:
The MMUA Tom Bovitz Memorial Scholarship Award winners were named on May 4 with
judges consisting of five MMUA member utility representatives who ranked their top four
essays.
Staff is pleased to share that our local winner has once again earned additional scholarship
funds in the statewide competition as Brock placed fourth out of 20 total submissions. This
entitles him to an additional $500 from MMUA for his post secondary education.
The award is named in honor of the late Tom Bovitz, a former general manager of Hibbing
Public Utilities and MMUA president who was also a firm believer in the value of education.
