TO: FROM:
ERMU Commission Eric Volk—Water Superintendent
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
November 14, 2017 6.1e
SUBJECT:
Staff Update
ACTION REQUESTED:
None
DISCUSSION:
• Delivered ten new water meters.
• Sealed the water meter, and took curb stop ties from six water services.
• Completed 25 BACTI/Total Chlorine Residual Samples
o All confirmed negative for Coliform Bacteria.
o Bacteriological/Disinfectant Residual Monthly Report submitted to the MDH
• Completed 20 routine fluoride samples
o All samples met MDH standards
o Submitted MDH Fluoride Report
• Submitted MPCA Discharge Monitoring Report(DMR) for the Diesel Generation Plant.
• The water operators have been out locating the distribution system. As the system is
located they will work with the mapping department to ensure our maps are accurate. The
mapping department will be printing new map books this winter.
• The WTP #7 expansion is now complete. Final payment should be made shortly.
• Horwitz Nsi installed a new 10"meter at WTP#6. The installation of the new meter
required some wiring and chemical feed changes, which the operators completed.
• The Water Department and Streets Department completed the annual drawdown of Lake
Orono to perform the inspection of the Elk River Dam. It's important to note that Elk
River received 3.5 inches of rain the weekend before the drawdown which resulted in
record flows for this time of the year. Attached is a chart showing the flows at 1,670 ft3/s
(12,525 gps). The estimated flow over the dam was 1,804 ft3/s (13,527 gps). Despite the
high flows, we were able to inspect a majority of the dam. However, due to the
Mississippi River being backed up into the Elk River, the inspection of the roller bucket
and the downstream riprap was not able to be performed. In previous years it has taken
about 24 hours for the lake to refill to its normal level; whereas this year it took about
four hours.
• The Water Department connected the new 6"water main along Highway 10. This is the
first section of water main to be relocated. The second section of water main to be
relocated will be completed in accordance with the MnDOT contract. The relocation will
take place in the spring of 2018.
