Subject: Director’s Report
This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to recent collaborations, strategic
planning, staff changes/developments, and park operations.
Orono Park
One of the last features to be completed at Orono Park are the pavilion capstones. We expect to see a
crew complete this work in the coming week. Netting for all the city’s pickleball and tennis courts will be
taken down by parks maintenance in the coming week.
YAC
A small gap continues to exist between the two concessions window metal shutters and the serving
counter at the YAC concessions building. This is the last remaining item on Ebert’s punch list. The
original seal did not work, so it was added to the order with two new door bottoms expected to be
installed in the next 2-3 weeks. The city has a balance including retainage owed to Ebert when this
project is completed.
Elimination of Underutilized Park Facilities
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan recommends on page 41 to eliminate the following duplicated and
underutilized park properties: Baldwin, North Terrace, Meadow, and Elk Hills Green Space. We are
currently working with the city attorney on this process. Initial research indicates that only North Terrace
and Elk Hills Green Space were acquired in the 1960’s with park dedication. This will come before the
Commission in an upcoming meeting to discuss before it is presented to City Council for final approval.
Bailey Point Nature Preserve
The Minnesota Land Trust completed its annual monitoring of Bailey Point Nature Preserve. They did
not find any changes over the past year that would negatively affect the conservation values of the land.
Jim Nystrom
Funeral services were recently held on October 22 for Jim Nystrom. He served on the Parks and
Recreation Commission from March 18, 2002, to February 28, 2017.
