Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the hiring of Patrick Bendel to the position of police officer effective November 22, 2022.
Background/Discussion
We have had an ongoing recruitment for police officers since mid-July. We have received 29 applications and have
interviewed most of them as they were received. Following successful completion of the background, physical, and
psychological testing we recommend Patrick Bendel to the position of police officer.
Mr. Bendel holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and has been working for the Red Lake Police Department
since December 2016. He started as a police officer and has earned his way into the lead highway safety officer
managing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant focusing on enforcing traffic laws with the
goal of zero traffic fatalities on the reservation.
As a lateral hire, Mr. Bendel will start at pay step 2 of the union contract. He will move to step 3 at six months of
employment and to the top step at one year of employment. All other pay and benefits will be consistent with
union contract and city policy.
Financial Impact
This is a budgeted position.
