Discuss the Playground Scope for Lion John Weicht Park (LJWP).
Background/Discussion
Councilmember Jennifer Wagner suggested at a recent Council meeting that the playground planned for LJWP
might need to be a larger design. This is based on City Council’s recent approval of concept plans presented by
Pat Briggs for a new apartment complex next to LJWP. The proposal is for three 44-unit buildings.
The Commission recommended a $200,000 playground at the October meeting. Staff recommended in 2020
a $250,000 play structure since LJWP is designated as a signature park. The cost to currently build a playground
like Orono Park is over $375,000. The lifespan of an LSI playground is 20-25 years.
Does the Commission want to revisit and consider a signature/community park type playground like Orono
Park?
Financial Impact
The PIF has $200,000 for 2023 to replace the current playground. There is no park dedication related to
the Pat Briggs development because the dedication was satisfied years ago with the dedication of LJWP.
