Background/Discussion
The State Legislature is considering 2023 for implementation of the Juneteenth holiday. The bill is currently in both
the House and Senate Omnibus Bills and is likelyT to be signed into la`v. The League of iVlinnesota Cities
recommends being prepared for passage of the bill and making sure it doesn't conflict vith city meeting schedules.
The addition of the new federal holidayT in state statutes mandates that no governmental work shall be conducted
on this dayT.
There is an Economic Development AuthorityT and a CityT Council meeting scheduled for June 19. It could be a
few more `veeks before the bill is signed into la`v because it must go through conference committee, so it mayT be
mid-May `vhen it's signed. TyTpicallyT, the second Council meetings of the month have public hearing items
scheduled by the Planning DepaYtment Staff will need to meet public notice deadlines foY the newspapeY, which
would be as earlyr as May 10; therefoYe, it is recommended to change the meeting date at this time.
