Action Requested
Recommend, by motion, the purchase and installation of a replacement destination playground at Lion John
Weicht Park.
Recommend, by motion, the color option for the Lion John Weicht Park playground.
Background/Discussion
At the December 14 meeting, the Commissioners expressed concerns that the original budget of $200,000 would
not be enough for a signature park playground. At the April 12 meeting, the Commissioners reviewed three
playground concepts at a price point more than $250,000. The Commissioners were unanimously in favor of a
destination-style playground for $409,000.
The recommended choice would have unique playground features that do not currently exist in any other
playground in Elk River. Elk River would be the first Minnesota city to install two of the major features in the
proposed playground. The design concept is ‘play in motion’ where each piece of equipment leads into the next
item of play.
Delivery time for the playground is more than six months so the installation time will be in spring of 2024. The
playground vendor can hold the playground equipment for next spring if it is purchased now. It does need to be
purchased before early June to lock in the 2023 pricing.
Financial Impact
The total cost to install the Lion John Weicht Park Playground is $409,000 - $100,000 PIF & $309,000 Park
Dedication.
