Discuss to move to consent, the position of Fire AcademyT Instructor.
Background/Discussion
The Elk River Fire AcademyT has held nine successful recruit academies for our department and the surrounding
agencies. One of the challenges has been retainiug enough instructoYs to help with the classes. We have tried
contracting with Centuryr College for the last two yrears so we could use their instructor coYe, however the
AcademyT did not generate revenue and did not have the consistencyT `vith instructors that `vas expected.
Our department members `vho have been part of the Academ�T since inception have had to dedicate a significant
amount of time to their full-time employment and the fire department in addition to the AcademyT. Moving
forward, we would like to hire our own instructor cadre to ensure we provide consistent and effective instruction
foY the Academy. This will potentially allow us to expand the Academyr year-round and generate revenue needed
for props and supplies the AcademyT uses.

Position Summary
This is a part-time position with a varied work schedule and hours depending on training schedule,
responsible for delivering training courses in fire and rescue services for fire cadets. The fire
academy typically runs from November to April. Additional opportunities to assist with regular
department training may be available throughout the year. Training and course instruction will
occur in a classroom setting and or an outside training environment. Under the direction of the
Deputy Chief of Training, this position is responsible for providing professional quality training,
conducting and teaching courses within the prescribed currieulum for study in compliance with
MN Firefighter I and II certification requirements.

To lead or assist with delivering training courses for fire and rescue that meet NFPA
1001 firefighter I and II requirements.
Conduct and assist with fire suppression skills and evolutions
Ensure that course materials and instruction format match the skill level of fire
cadets
Conduct and instruct eertification trainings for fire academy cadets
Assist in preparing the classroom and the skill training areas
Performs other duties as direeted.
Ensures safe and effective use of training center facilities during course delivery and
all other related duties while promoting ERFD core values

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
❑ Considerable knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures.
❑ Kriowledge of required credentials and certifications for firefighting
❑ Skill and ability to apply firefighting techniques and procedures.
❑ Skill in operating and directing various firefighting apparatus and equipment.
❑ Ability to communicate well through written and verbal means.
❑ Ability to speak in front of a crowd and to make a presentation.

Minimum Qualifications
❑ This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of one (1) year
firefighting experience.
❑ Minnesota State certified NFPA 1001 Firefighter II
❑ Ability to participate in fire suppression and rescue activities which may require
lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds, standing, walking, crawling, bending, stooping, climbing
stairs and ladders, working at extreme heights, and working outdoors in all conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
❑ NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I
❑ Experience delivering fire department training
❑ MBFTE 1001 Qualified Instructor
