Background/Discussion
In 2022, Wastewater Operators Jason Ames and Andy Kitzman attended the Cohort Energy Conservation
Program offered by the Minnesota Technical Assistance Program.
The training identified opportunities to save energy and equipment wear in our extended aeration process at the
wastewater plant. Upon implementing the suggestions from the training, we achieved both goals. The reduced
energy consumption is estimated to save up to $30,000 per year. As a result of this achievement, the Elk River
Wastewater Treatment Plant was selected as the recipient of the 2024 Resource Recovery and Energy Excellence
Award which was accepted by our staff at the Minnesota Wastewater Operators Association Conference on
February 7, 2024.
