Updated: January 2023 Request for Action To Parks and Recreation Commission Item Number 8.1 Agenda Section Discussion Meeting Date March 13, 2024 Prepared by Michael Hecker, Park and Recreation Manager Item Description Camp Cozy Park Natural Resources Management Plan Reviewed by Joe Stremcha, Assistant City Administrator Reviewed by Action Requested Discuss recreation components and features in the Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP) for Camp Cozy Park. Background/Discussion On December 13, 2023, the Parks and Recreation Commission approved the NRMP for the 48-acre Camp Cozy Park. The plan recommends the restoration of approximately 16-acres for prairie restoration to preserve existing native prairie and the reduction of non-native woody species in the forest areas. FMR has an opportunity, in cooperation with the city, to pursue specific grants for the coordination of restoration activities. To complement these restoration efforts, the city must define future recreation components and features. The current NRMP proposes a potential trail (0.4 mile) shown as a dashed line on the attachment. The plan also recommends a boat launch with a location to be determined. The trails can be paved; however, staff recommends the “North Secondary Trail” be decommissioned at future date. This section of trail will conflict with periodically prescribed burns and is redundant to the “Perimeter Trail.” Recreation opportunities and infrastructure recently discussed for inclusion within the park includes the following: interpretive signage, canoe and/or boat access, paving existing and future trails, a paved parking lot, and picnic shelters. The commission is encouraged to discuss any other desired recreational opportunities for Camp Cozy Park. Financial Impact None. Any grant funding for restoration work will need to be mutually agreed upon by the city and the FMR. Mission/Policy/Goal Opportunity to live, work and play Attachments  Camp Cozy Aerials
