Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, the meeting of the Elk River Heritage Preservation Commission
was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Chair Lindberg.yyyyyyyy

Chair Lindberg led the commission in the Pledge of Allegiance.Niiiiiiii
3. Consider Agenda
Moved by Commissioner Mauren and seconded by Commissioner Griffiths to approve the January
18, 2024, Heritage Preservation Commission agenda.

4. Consider Minute ]L
Moved by Commissioner Griffiths and seconded by Commissioner Campbell to approve the
September 21, 2023, Heritage Preservation minutes.

5.1 Discuss Elk River's "History Minute"
Mr. Carlton noted Chair Lindberg is working with communications staff member Jake Pace on recording
the next History Minute with the topic on the Hanke pit. Mr. Carlton asked about other topic suggestions.
Linda Campbell volunteered for the spring topic. Commissioner Griffiths volunteered for the dam and mill
topic which includes the bank restoration project. Mr. Carlton will follow up with Brandon Wisner
regarding the status of the dam project.
5.2 2024 HPC Events
Mr. Carlton stated the two events proposed so far are the Farmer's Market (late July/early August) and the
Fall Conference. He asked if anyone was interested in the conference to let him know.
Mr. Carlton will check with cable TV producer Jake Pace to see if the history documentary has been posted.

Commissioner Campbell asked about putting a QR code on the HPC posters at the Farmer's Market to
direct folks to either the documentary or history minutes.
5.3 Other Business
The commission discussed the oral histories that have been recorded and how to condense them down to
highlights to share with the public.
The commission discussed placing a kiosk explaining the history of the downtown water tower.
Communications staff could design and apply the design standards of whatever structure they decide - a
plaque or two-sided sign. The city owns the property which allows for installation. They discussed the
content of the sign and the story they wanted to tell, with th ., osibility of the, .eed for fire service and the
importance of the water tower.

Commissioner Campbell discussed her trip to the Preserve Minnesota conference i*Ma to in September
2023, and distributed a packet of information along with a PowerPoint presentation. She noted Mankato's
and North Mankato's use of city art to draw visitors to their community.
Commissioner Tuckey asked the commission to discuss some possibilities of what we can do to draw
visitors to our city and perhaps highlight people who live and work here, or the city's historical aspects,
using such things as public art (sculptures and murals), historical locations, or the importance of
transportation (railroad, river).
