Introduction
Staff is seeking authorization to contract with Sherburne County Public Works to include a pedestrian
tunnel for the Great Northern Trail during the reconstruction of CR 33.
Discussion
Plans for the Great Northern Trail are to pave it all the way from Elk River to Princeton. When
complete, this trail will be a premier regional trail that will receive heavy use. The opportunity exists to
include a pedestrian tunnel under CR 33 during reconstruction in summer of 2006. Park sand Recreation
staff, Engineering staff, and the Chief of Police all believe that this tunnel is a crucial investment in
pedestrian safety.
Waiting and adding this tunnel in the future, after road reconstruction, will potentially double the cost.
Financial Impact
Preliminary estimate done by Sherburne County Public Works - $190,000
Lighting and security camera (recommended by Chief Beahen) - $5,000
Staff recommends amending the 2006 Parks Improvement Plan to include this project.
Funding Source: Park Dedication Funds
