Background/Discussion Parks and Recreation Commission There is currently one vacancy on the Parks and Recreation Commission with a term ending 2/28/25. Melissa Fermoyle was interviewed at the June 17, 2024, Council meeting. The other applicant, Jake Krauth, was not in attendance. Planning Commission There are currently two vacancies on the Planning Commission. One term ends 2/28/27 and the second ends on 2/28/26. I was a volunteer earlier in my career with the St. Paul Jaycees where I planned and participated in many of their events. I served on their board as committee chair, and ultimately VP over programs. I have always wanted to give back to my community. While I don't live in Elk River I do work and have worked here, for 10 years. I wanted to get involved in the community to meet individuals to strengthen my network of HR professionals; with serving on the Board for the ERACC I have met a variety of individuals. I participated in the Community Leadership program offered through ERACC. I received a wealth of knowledge regarding the history of Elk River during this event. I would like to continue to be involved within the city. What skills, training, and experience would you bring to the commission for which you seek appointment? In my role as a HR professional I am able to meet new people, get acclimated quickly, collaborate and be accountable. I am currently a volunteer for Special Olympics, Allina Hospice, and the Board Chair of the ERACC. I am able to plan events, see them through, and communicate about the event. I love the idea of having a job that has a positive impact on my local community. The general job description also appeals to me of open communication in a team setting where you work together to solve problems. Also, the facebook post I saw for the opening was great. I would bring the following skills; critical thinking, interpersonal communication, open mindedness, research & analysis, task balancing and prioritization. I have relevant work experience as a field services technician at NAU Country insurance and as a night lead at Coborn's. While attending a recent city council meeting, I wanted the city approve the sale of land and the granting of an economic incentive to benefit a local business, approve a plan to tackle emerald ash borer, and work with another local business to get their building project in compliance with city code. Whether the problem is economic or environmental it amazed me how big picture, national problems which can face a grid lock at the federal level, can find resolution at the local level. I want to be a part of that. What skills, training, and experience would you bring to the commission for which you seek appointment? Through out my educational background and professional career, I have been known for my problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills. My education was in philosophy and the liberal arts, and for the last few years, I have been working as a data analyst. I can think deeply about complicated issues from different perspectives and bring some technical skills and statistical thinking to solving tough challenges.
