Approve, by motion, the purchase of personal floatation devices with the Public Safety Aid funds.
Background/Discussion
On May 20, 2024, the Council and public safety departments discussed the one-time Public Safety Aid
allocated to the City of Elk River. The city received $1,145,601, which was to be split between the police and
fire departments. The Council requested they be advised of purchases made using this fund.
Given the recent water emergency and drowning incident in the City of Elk River, it is crucial to prioritize the
safety of our police officers by providing them with personal floatation devices (PFDs). The risks associated
with swift water rescues and emergencies cannot be overstated, and the proper equipment is essential for
ensuring the well-being of both officers and the individuals they are trying to save. By investing in PFDs, we
can better assist those in need and ensure that our officers are prepared to face the challenges of their jobs
with the utmost care and professionalism.
Financial Impact
The cost is $7,104.99, which will be paid for through the Public Safety Aid funds received from the State of
Minnesota.
