ELK RIVER PARK BOARD MEETING
HELD IN THE VILLAGE OFFICE BUILDING
September 5, 1973 at 7:30 PM.
BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Les Derr, Gene Schuldt, DwaineBecklin, , Gary Pestello,
Gene Scribner, Shirley Matuseski.
MEMBERS ABSENT: None
GUESTS: Stan Moreland, Steve Ostby, John Dietz, Dick Hales.
FOOTBALL PROGRAM: Steve Ostby represented Quarterbacks Club which will handle boys football
program this year. Steve reported that seven teams will be in the league this year. Jerseys,
footballs, referees, and coaches are already taken care of. The only need is for funds to
pay insurance. It was estimated that insurance cost would not be over $400.00. Beckland
moved, Matuseski seconded that $400.00 be made available for insurance. Unanimously passed.
Rules for total participation will be set up.
BABE RUTH BASEBALL: Dick Hales and Stan Moreland reported that this year w.ent quite good.
League will be realigned for next year undera town team basis. Charter will be submitted
to State Babe Ruth Assoication for next year. Four town teams will be organized: Two in
Elk River, one in Zimmerman, one in Rogers. Program will be expanded to include younger
boys also, ages 8-12. Sixty boys participated this year. Less Derr asked for breakdown of
participation by community (township). Equipment will be turned over to LesDerr. Forty
dollors will be needed for charter cost for next year. Parental support was generally weak,
but picked up during the playoffs. Inter-community competition with Monticello was very
good. One injury occurred; spike cut required fifteen stitches. Scribner moved, and Matusesk"
seconded that forty dollors be made available for next year's Charter cost. Unanimously
passed.
SUMMER RECREATION: John Dietz reported 185 boys and girls participated as follows: 27 track,
17 tennis, 25 girls soft ball, 60 Pee Wee boys, 40 Midget boys,40 Wee Wee boys. Tennis did
not work out very well. Recruiting volunteers help for Summer Rec. program was not
successful. Bruce Blocker assisted with pay ($1.60 per hour) being provided by N.Y.C. funds
from State of Minnesota. Participation in boys basefall was generally good, except for
Midgets wh:ich was poor. No injuries occurred. John Dietz requested payment of $100.00 with-
held for weeks absence. Matuseski moved, Scribner seconded that $100.00 be paid to John Diet
Discussion brought out the fact that John fulfitted his contract by providing for adequate
supervision during his absence as originally called for. Unanimously passed. John recommende
that emphasis next year be placed on boys baseball, girls softball, and tennis.
BEER LICENSE: Fast pitch league runs beer sales to finance league. John Dietz was contacted
by County Commissioners regarding use of beer license by others. County Commissioners
stated that any one other than Fast Pitch League wanting to utilize the beer license must
obtain permission from their board. One tournament is still scheduled. Eagles Slow Pitch,
for Sept. 15 and 16. Les will notify them regarding beer license.
Becklin moved, Schuldt seconded that Elk River Village be reimbursed $50.00 for lifeguard
costs on July 4th Park activities . Unanimously passed.
