Action Requested
Mayor Dietz and Council to recognize the promotion of Nick Madsen to the position of Lieutenant with the
fire department and for Mayor Dietz to present the oath of office to Lieutenant Madsen.
Background/Discussion
The fire department provides leadership development and training for firefighters interested in pursuing
leadership in the fire service.
The core component is our Officer Development Program, where firefighters are assigned a current captain
or lieutenant as a mentor and receive a workbook outlining multiple tasks, skills, emergency responses,
training methods delivery, and leadership development. Depending on firefighter performance, the program
takes approximately one year.
Firefighters work with department chiefs and officers to complete the task book, while continuing their
regularly required training and duties as firefighters. After the program, firefighters can pursue a formal
leadership role in the department.
Nick Madsen completed this program and, after being interviewed by a panel of three chiefs and a captain, was
offered the position of lieutenant with the department.
