3.6. SR 02-08-1993
ITEM 3.6.
TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: PHIL HALS, STREET/PARK SUPT.
DATE: FEBRUARY 2, 1993
SUBJECT: PURCHASES
In December, the City Council authorized the purchase of a dump
box and a hydraulic system for the used truck, number 219, that
was purchased in November. All of these purchases including
the sander, are financed by 1993 Equipment Certificates. The
last major item needed to complete the package is a salt/sander
spreader. I received quotes from three suppliers.
Falls Machine
Reach Equipment
Crysteel Dist.
$1,645
1,600
1,335
The unique thing about this quote is that the lowest priced
sander is the one that I prefer, so unless the Council directs
otherwise, I will make arrangements to purchase the sander from
Crysteel Dist. for $1,335.00 plus tax.
.
In the 1993 Equipment Repair budget, there is $1,000 for small
tools. I would like to ask the Council's permission to
purchase a hydraulic hose crimping machine for about $800, and
roughly $200 worth of hydraulic hose and fittings so as not to
exceed to the $1,000 amount.
Presently, we purchase all of our hydraulic hoses from the
local NAPA store. I did the following price comparisons on a
five foot hydraulic hose with male fittings. For NAPA to
furnish materials, cut and crimp would be $18.69. The
materials alone with City labor to cut and crimp would be
$9.31 or a 51% savings. With NAPA now occupying their
building on east Highway 10, it takes an average of 30 minutes
for one of my people to drive there, have the hose made up and
return, where the same person could cut and crimp the hose in
our shop in half that time. The last point that makes this a
valuable tool for the City to own is that it is available 24
hours a day to replace broken hoses that could otherwise make a
snowplow or other equipment unusable until regular business
hours. I feel that the cost savings to the City for material
costs alone could pay for this tool in less than five years,
without considering the cost of labor or downtime.
