As you can see, the outside projects become quite limited with
the winter weather, and speaking of winter weather, December
and January have given us a wide variety of storms to deal
with. Probably the most expensive storm was the freezing rain
that fell on January 20, but by running our sand spreader
trucks six hours of overtime on January 20 and starting three
trucks at 4:00 a.m. on the 21st, we were able to keep a
potentially large problem to a minor inconvenience. The down
side of this storm is that our yearly supply of salt/sand was
seriously depleted. Other agencies, such as MnDOT, Anoka
County, Hennepin County, and countless cities are all in such
short supply of salt that MnDOT organized a supplemental bid to
procure additional salt for this winter. The cost will
certainly be higher than our first bid but I felt that we had
no choice but to try to secure an additional 75 ton of salt at
this time. I will inform the Council of the costs when I have
that information.
One of my goals for this department is to keep the employees
involved in productive work and necessary maintenance tasks
when the weather doesn't allow outside projects. We build 25
picnic tables for the parks each year, along with equipment
modifications, rebuilding, repair and preventative maintenance
so the winter season accomplishments are more than just plowing
snow.
