DATE: FEBRUARY 25, 1993 SUBJECT: PLANT A TREE DAY Representatives from Winnetka tree farm in Brooklyn Park would like to involve the City of Elk River in a program to encourage residents to plant trees. This is how it works: 1. The City advertises an evening tree seminar. A City staff member and a person from Winnetka Tree Farms put on an hour long class on tree choices, proper planting techniques and safety concerns. 2. Residents who attend the seminar are given a coupon good for an additional 20% off tree sale prices at Winnetka Farms for the tree sale on April 24 and 25. 3. The City can use the dollar value of this sale towards the designation of official "Minnesota Tree City," without actually expending City funds. . 4. In addition, if the City wanted to offer a $25.00 reimbursement to residents for each tree of 1 1/2" diameter or la+ger that they planted on their property that was located within 20 feet of the curb line. A consideration such as this has merit in that the City would gain boulevard trees and not have to plant or water them and the prtoperty owners would gain front yard trees. The Park and Recreation Commission should consider this proposal and make a recommendation to the City Council at the joint meeting on 3/8/93. . 720 Dodge Avenue N.W., Elk River, Minnesota 55330 (612) 441-7420 Winnetka Tree Farm - 9730 Winnetka, Brooklyn Park, MN 55369 PRICE liST SHADE TREES Variety Size Retail Tree 20% Size Retail Tree 20% Sale Discount Sale Discount ASH 1.75" $90 $72 2.5" 155 125 Bergeson/Marshall/Summit/Patmore 2" 220-160 120 96 3' 200 160 -BIRCH 6' 89 71 12' 283-216 169 135 River (clump) 8' 192-145 99 79 14' 347-260 199 160 10' 253-190 139 111 -BIRCH 2" 150 129 103 3S 263 249 lQQ River (single stem) 2.5" 270-198 149 119 4" 259 207 3" 340-205 169 135 CATALPA 2" 140 112 3" 190 162 2.5" 165 132 3.5" 250 200 CORK TREE, Amur 2" 135 108 3" 210 168 2.5" 170 136 HACKBERRY 1.5" 95 76 2" 125 100 1.75" 100 80 2.5" 165 132 LINDEN, American/Little Leaf/ 1.75" 198-165 110 88 2.5" 297-243 180 144 Greespire 2" 246-185 140 112 MAPLE, Norway/ClevelandlFairview/ 1.75" 198-160 110 88 2.5" 297-228 180 144 Emerald Queen/Emerald Lustre/ 2" 225-177 140 112 Columnar MAPLE 1.5" 164-148 99 79 2" 246-205 170 136 Rubrum/Northwoods/ Autumn Flame 1.75" 198-170 135 108 2.5" 327-255 210 168 MAPLE,SugadLegacy 1.5" 163-145 99 79 1.75" 198-170 135 108 OAK Pin 1.5" 155 99 79 2" 210 170 136 1.75" 170 135 108 QUAKING ASPEN 1.75" 99 79 2.5" 140 112 2" 110 88 ORNAMENTALS CRAB, Radiant/Red Splendor/ 1.5" 140-105 75 60 2" 203-147 125 100 Snowdrift/Spring Snow/Thunderchild 1.75" 164-119 100 80 CHERRY, Canada Red 1.75" 203-143 105 84 2" 270-172 125 100 CHOKECHERRY, Amur 2.5" 135 108 3" 145 116 RUSSIAN OLIVE 1.75" 83 65 2" 88 70 PAGODA DOGWOOD 3' 50 40 4' 63 50 HAWTHORNE, Thornless 1.5" 158-118 75 60 1.75" 194-150 100 80 EVERGREENS SPRUCE 4' 140-100 60 48 7' 250-175 95 76 Black HiIIs/Colorado/Norway 5' 157-125 70 56 8' 275-200 120 96 6' 220-154 80 64 PINE, Scotch 6' 220-154 80 64 8' 275-200 120 96 7' 250-175 95 76 *Tree Sale Special.Deal '\.I t t f/.e-r-I~ :r~ rvl 1.3> ~. TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: PHIL HALS, STREET/PARK SUPT. DATE: MARCH 15, 1993 SUBJECT: PLANT A TREE DAY On March 8, 1993, I gave the City Council an outline of a program from Winnetka Tree Farms that would allow residents a 20% discount coupon toward the purchase of nursery trees if they attended a tree planting seminar that would be hosted by a City staff member some time in April. I have since contacted local nurseries and they have expressed an interest in offering some tree specials of their own at such a seminar. My recommendation is that the City offer the evening seminar and ask all three suppliers to attend with their price discounts and possibly allow each one a ten minute time slot to present their products. . Second, I would ask the City Council to endorse the program of offering residents a $25 reimbursement for planting a tree, 1 1/2" or more in diameter, of a City selected species, more than ten feet, but less than 20' from the curb line of the street. Each property owner would be limited to reimbursement for two trees. This would help establish boulevard trees and also allow the residents some ownership and responsibility for care and watering. . 720 Dodge Avenue N.W., Elk River, Minnesota 55330 (612) 441-7420
