Introduction
The City of Elk River, on bellalf of tlle Heritage Preservatiol1 Comrnission (HPC), applied for a grant in
tlle amount of $15,150 from tile State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO) to continue tlle
archaeological \vork at tlle Hoebellleinrich property off T\vin Lake. TIle graIlt \vas denied becatlse tlle
\vork is not a prograln acti\lity eligible for Historic Preset"vatian Fund (HPF) grant assistance tluougll tlle
Certified Local Goverrunent (CLG) grant prograln. Tile reasoning for clle denial is because \vork \vas
done at tllls site in 2005 and tlle grant does not allo\v for furtller teStlllg at tlle saine site,
Discussion
i\pproxllnately 200 llldividuals attended last year's excavation, \Vitll llulf spellding at least 4 110urs getting
llands-oll experience. TIle project \vas offered to .volunteers for t\vo consecutive \veekends. The City
\vas able to receive donations from area businesses for food and beverages. Tile llldividuals \'lere slu\7eyed
ta determine if tllere \vas enougll interest to pursue anotller project in 2006. TIle ov.el\\rllehning response
\vas to continue tlle \\Tork in 2006. Tile HPC and St. Cloud State University (SCS"LT) believe tills is a
public educational opportunity rarely matched in tile State and believe tius \'lork to be v.aluable to tile
cOilUllUnity and sllould be continued.
TIle HPC, along \Vitil St. Cloud State University (SCSU), discussed pooling tlleir n.lonies togetller to
continue tlle \vork. TIle HPC Ilas $5,000 budgeted for tllls \vark and SCSlJ \Villlnatcll tile $5,000. Dr.
Rotllaus is \Villlllg to donate his titne, \vhicll is \Vortll $50/110ur. Tllere is still a need for additional paid
arcllaeologists to continue tllls \vork. Once tlle \vork is completed, additional tUne and m01ley are spent
on reporting tile data, soil testing, dating the lnaterials found, etc. TIle $10,000 does not allo\v for tlle
\vork to be adequately completed nor does it allo\v 1nany opportunities for dle \7olunteers to receive
llands-on experience. i\ fe\v businesses, Eagles (a resolution \vas pre\7iously approv"ed), First Natiollal
Bank, tlle Bank of Elk Ri\Ter, Elk Ri\Ter Landfill, and \:val-l.vfart, I1av.e been contacted and l1av.e donated
1110ney to contitllle tlle \'lork.. \\1itll tllese donations, tlle HPC \vill be able to continue tlle arcllaeological
\'lork. \Yle \vill be continuing to solicit donations ta aIlo\v for additional \'lark to be con.lpleted.
