SUBJECT: TERMS OF OFFICE FOR COMMISSIONERS

There has been a number of brief conversations at both the City
Council level and Park & Rec Commission level regarding filling
of vacancies on the Park and Recreation Commission. Concern
has been expressed that soliciting applications during the
Christmas season for a vacancy on the Commission that takes
place on January 1, is not a good time of the year to get
interested citizens to apply for the Commission. Discussion
has taken place about adjusting the terms for the Commission
and/or adjusting the timeframe when applications are
solicited. A reasonable approach seems to be one that has been
discussed at a recent Commission meeting. This approach is to
keep the terms of office effective on January 1, but to solicit
applications in October before the holiday season. This would
help stagger the interview process the Council goes through for
vacancies on all the Commissions, and may help the Park & Rec
Commission get a larger response to the vacancies that
periodically exist. Also, with this approach, no change in the
terms of office (or the Park & Rec Ordinance) would be required.
