FROM:
SUBJECT:
PAT KLAERS, CITY ADMIN~t~ATOR
APRIL 29, 1993 r~
RUSS ANDERSON, FIRE CHIEF
DATE:
Per City Council request, Fire Chief, Russ Anderson, will be in
attendance at this meeting to discuss the City Fitness Room and
equipment and the Fire and Ambulance Service fitness equipment.
At the 4/26 meeting, I also advised the Council that I
anticipated a brief update from the Fire Chief on his work
duties and schedule and the previously discussed need for a
housing inspection program. However, only information and
material on the Fire Chief's work schedule is available and
some handouts on this topic will be distributed at the
meeting. The discussion on the inspection program will have to
take place at a future City Council meeting.

Elk River Fire

Dear Elk River Businessperson:

The immediate question that you may find yourself
"Why bother?" If this is the case, please let me take

.
I feel that by offering you the opportunity to perform your own
fire inspection, many positive things happen. The inspection
brings to your attention the types of fire and life safety
hazards that I feel are important. Important to you in
assuring that your business will not be disrupted by fire.
Important to your employees and customers in that it affords
them a safe environment in which to work and conduct business.
Important to the Elk River Fire Department because it assists
us in accomplishing the over 300 fire inspections required each
year. Important to the community because a good fire
prevention program saves lives and reduces property loss.
The inspection form that you are being asked to complete
addresses three major areas of concern. First, what may cause
a fire to start? Secondly, if a fire does start, what may
cause that fire to propagate and intensify? Thirdly, if there
is a fire, how will the occupants safely egress the building?
As you can see, we do not take our inspection program lightly
and we hope that your share our concerns. If for some reason
you are unable to complete and return the inspection form to
us, please be advised that a fire inspector will contact you
and assist you in completing the inspection. If we can be of
any further assistance, please feel free to contact us using
the phone number furnished on the inspection form.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
.
Russ Anderson
