LORI JOHNSON, FINANCE DIRECTOR
OCTOBER 5, 1993
SUBJECT: DENTAL INSURANCE
DATE:
The increasing cost of health and dental insurance is a major issue to most employees. All
employees want good coverage at a minimal cost. In an effort to reduce premiums while
maintaining quality coverage, the City will be changing dental insurance companies on
January 1, 1994. Coverage with Delta Dental will be terminated and Health Partners
(formerly Group Health) will take over.
Under the new plan with Health Partners, the aggregate value of benefits is increased and
the premium decreases. As you can see from the Summary of Benefits and Premiums on
the back of this memo, dental insurance benefits increase in several areas: First, sealants
are now covered. Second, there is no deductible. Third, there is no annual maximum limit
of benefits that can be paid. The family premium for this coverage decreases $4.65 per
month and single coverage decreases $1.12 per month. An employee selecting family
coverage will save $55.80 per year.
Not only will the dental premiums decrease, health insurance premiums will automatically'
decrease five percent on January 1 due to this change. Coverage will remain the same
while the family premium will decrease $26.48 per month and the single premium will
decrease $8.36 per month. An employee selecting family health insurance will save
$331.20 per year; a savings of $373.56 per year if an employee also selects family dental
insurance. The annual savings to City employees is estimated to be around $6,550.00.
Finally, enrollment information for Health Partners dental insurance will be distributed in
November; at that time you.will receive a list of all dentists in the Health Partners
network. If you have questions prior to that time, please contact me.
