SUBJECT: GOPHER BOUNTY
At the October 4th City Council meeting, the Council directed
staff to survey surrounding communities to find out the going
rate for gopher bounty.
Attached is list of those cities, townships and counties
contacted, with the rate being paid by each. As the survey
indicates, 10 out of 20 localities surveyed pay a gopher
bounty. Three of the localities (those showing a ?) have not
returned my phone calls, therefore, the amount of bounty is
unknown. Two of the localities pay $.75, including Elk River;
two pay $1.00; and three pay $1.25.

The attached information also shows the dollar amount paid by
the City of Elk River for gopher bounty during the past nine
years. The Star News reported the gopher bounty expenditure at
$1,000 per year. This information was incorrectly given by
staff at the October 4, Council meeting. The correct figure is
about $82.00 which is the average yearly amount paid for gopher
bounty by the City over the past four years.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
--Leave the gopher bounty at $.75
--Raise the gopher bounty to an amount desirable to the Council
--Eliminate the gopher bounty entirely
