SUBJECT: OUTDOOR ICE RINKS
The following recommendation came informally from the Park and
Recreation Commission. Due to a lengthy meeting and the fact
that several members had to leave early, this item was only
discussed briefly. I would appreciate your comments on the
recommendations from the Park and Recreation Commission and
those of my staff. I will include this item as an agenda item
at the December Park and Recreation Commission meeting.
1. Spend some park funds to add geotextile fabric and dirt to
improve the skating rinks and Lion's Park.
2. Possible locations for additional outdoor ice rinks would
be on Lake Orono, on the pond by the street garage, and in
Moldenhauer Park.
3.
Spend additional money for equipment and labor to hire one
or two individuals that could clean ice rinks and flood
them during evening hours.

adding more lights and adding one more sheet ice rink.

week after skating hours. The City street crew and the
school district would continue to plow any snow in excess
of one inch from the rinks. City street crew would do
initial and supplemental floodings at Lion's Park.

It is possible to construct temporary rinks by using timbers
and large sheets of polyethylene. The cost refers to the
expense of timbers and polyethylene. The rinks will lack
warming facilities, restrooms, lighting or adult supervision,
but are in walking distance for the neighborhood.
My recommendation would be that we construct one or two of
these rinks and monitor their usage. At this time, the park
funds are low and Lori Johnson is not in the office to answer
questions regarding funding. If I can be of further
assistance, please give me a call.
