Introduction
The council requested information on hiring the thirtieth officer, wanting reassurance that adequate funds
were available for the additional officer.
Discussion
I have done a review of the costs and costs savings involved in the process, and have the following
information for the council's review.
Financial Impact
There are several costs savings that accompanied my request for the additional officer. They are listed in
detail as follows:
Not replacing Officer Jason Andersen, who resigned last October, until March 27th, 2006. (2006 savings
only) $13,219 (Does not included benefit savings)
Starting the two current replacement officers at the bottom union step for patrol, March 27th through 12-
31-06.

Starting one replacement officer at bottom step, and one at step two, July 10th through 12-31-06.

Two month delay in getting Sgt. Tyler and Investigator Miller replaced, not including benefits.

The estimated cost for the new officer from July 10 through 12-31-06 is$19,552 plus benefits. Even if we
start the last officer at top patrol, the cost is $29,743 plus benefits, well below the savings listed above.

Total for additional costs
The combined costs, including benefits, are less than half of what the department has saved this year in
payroll costs. The council can be assured that there is sufficient funding for this extra position through
the end of 2006.
