Introduction
The Police Department has been awarded a federal grant and also has been given the chance to
send an IT staff person to be trained on the equipment at no charge.
Discussion
OnJuly 18, 2006, the Police Department was awarded a grant by the Office of National Drug
Control Policy Counterdrug Technology Assessment Center for a "Forensic Tool Kit." This
software/hardware combination is a complete toolkit that can be used for digital forensic
examination from acquisition to analysis to reporting. It will allow us to acquire the image from a
suspect hard drive and allow the examiner to perform a complete index of its contents. The value
of this grant is $12,000. (Includes software, computer, and 19" monitor)
On October 3 through October 7, the United States Army Electronic Proving Ground will be
administering the training for the Technology Transfer Program on behalf of the Office of
National Drug Control Policy. Because the equipment can recover passwords in Arabic, Russian
and Asian as well as English, the location of the training is not public, but it will be here in the
USA, possibly on the east coast.
All travel, lodging, and partial per diem costs associated with the training are covered by the U.S.
Government.
Financial Impact
Our only cost would be meals for the attendee.
