SR 10-02-2006 City of Elk River REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Agenda Section Meeting Date Administration October 10, 2006 Item Description · Archaeological Dig Presentation · Resolution Acknowledging Alan Hoebelheinrich for his Outstandin Citizenshi in the Ci of Elk River Item Number 5.2. Prepared by Rebecca Hau , Environmental Admin Reviewed by Introduction During the weekends of July 27-30 and August 3-4, the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) in cooperation with St. Cloud State University (SCSU) continued the archaeological work at the Alan Hoebelheinrich property off Twin Lake. Discussion Approximately 32 volunteers were able to participate in the excavation, spending at least 4 hours getting hands-on experience. There were also several people who came for the tours. The City was able to receive donations from area businesses for fmancing, food, and beverages. The HPC and SCSU believe this is a public educational opportunity rarely matched in the State and believe this work to be valuable to the community. Dr. Richard Rothaus, Professor from St. Cloud State University will be giving a brief presentation on what was found this summer and what we hope to find in 2007 if the project is approved to continue. The City would also like to recognize Alan Hoebelheinrich for being an outstanding citizen in allowing us to excavate on his property the last couple of years and continue in 2007. Financial Impact $10,000 out of HPC budget and staff time Attachments Resolution Acknowledging Alan Hoebelheinrich for his Outstanding Citizenship Action Requested Staff is requesting the Council to approve continuing the archaeological work at the Hoebelheinrich site in 2007. Mayor Klinzing is asked to present the plaque and resolution to Alan Hoebelheinrich. Council Action Motion by _ Second by _ Vote Follow Up C: \Documents and Settings \tallard\Local Settings \ Temporary Internet Files\OLKF\REQUEST COUNCIL ACTION-arch dig recognition. doc RESOLUTION #06- RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING ALAN HOEBELHEINRICH FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP IN THE CITY OF ELK RIVER WHEREAS, Alan Hoebelheinrich has been a resident of Elk River since 1948; and WHEREAS, the City of Elk River is grateful to Alan Hoebelheinrich for allowing the City of Elk River's Heritage Preservation Commission and St. Cloud State University to conduct public archaeological digs on his property in the summers of 2005 and 2006; and WHEREAS, the City of Elk River looks forward to continuing this partnership in 2007. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Elk River that Alan Hoebelheinrich is recognized as an outstanding citizen in the City of Elk River.
