This new job description incorporates some of the comments from Assistant Chief Jim Nystrom, some of the comments from Fire Chief Russ Anderson, and all of the comments from the City Council. In addition to these changes, some of the language in the original job description has been cleaned up. In this regard, the word volunteer has been deleted throughout the job description and only one reference is made to a "paid on call" department. Train and supervise firefighters to ensure an efficient department. Survey building, grounds, and equipment to determine departmental needs. Investigate cause of fires. Duties/Responsibilities 1.) e Administration -- Coordinate fire department programs. Create and manage department budget and review with City Administrator for approval by City Council. Plan the staffing, organization, and function of the personnel in order to ensure an efficient and effective program for fire prevention and protection. Evaluate the fire department training program. Establish and maintain Mutual Aid Agreements with neighboring fire departments for response to emergencies as needed. Establish and implement a public information program that is appropriate for both the adult and youth population regarding fire safety, prevention, and emergency activities. 2.) FIRE CHIEF The City of Elk River (pop. 13,000) is accepting applications for the position of Fire Chief. The department has 35 volunteer members. Elk River has an 87 square mile fire district on the NW fringe of the metropolitan area and had 290 runs in 1993. The Fire Chief is responsible for management of fire suppression, prevention, and inspection activities and also serves as the Emergency Preparedness Director. Desire experience in budgeting and community relations. Administrative skills and technical knowledge are essential. Desire ten years fire department experience, five as a command officer. A degree in Fire Administration, Fire Science, Management or related field is preferred; equivalent work experience with special training and education is acceptable. Salary range $38,000 - $49,500.
