RE: ELK PARK CENTER TRUNK SEWER AND WATER IMPROVEMENTS
CHANGE ORDER NO. 1
Dear Mr. Klaers:
Enclosed are three copies of Change Order No. 1 for the Arcon Construction contract on the
trunk sanitary sewer and water improvements serving Elk Park Center. This change order
relates to the jacking of the watermain and sanitary sewer under TH 169.
At the time that the construction of the jacking was initiated, a substantial amount of large
boulders were found in the area of the jacking pit. These raised the potential of blocking the
casing from crossing underneath the highway. In order to deal with this concern, the size
of the casings for the sanitary sewer and water were increased from 20 inches and 24 inches
to 30 inches. A 30-inch casing allows the Contractor to send a man to the end of the casing
to break up and remove any boulders that may be encountered during the jacking process.
Any size smaller than 30 inches does not allow this type of operation. Therefore, if a
smaller casing were to run into a large boulder, the casing would have to be withdrawn and
the process started over again. Obviously, that is a much more expensive operation.
The change order compensates the Contractor for the increase in material cost for the larger
casing and the labor associated with the jacking and dealing with the boulders in the area.
The total amount of the change order is $13,368.75. There would be no extension of the
completion date to accomplish this change order. We have carefully reviewed the situation
in the field and would recommend approval of this change order.
