Prepared by Tina Allard, Ci Clerk Reviewed by ~ Introduction Margaret Longie with Community Aid Elk River (CAER) requested the Council to proclaim March as Minnesota FoodShare Month. Discussion Minnesota FoodShare sponsors a March campaign each year to help restock local food shelves across the state. The March campaign is a public awareness opportunity to educate the public about the need for food shelves and the good work they do in each community. Financial Impact N/A Attachments . Council Action Motion by_ Second by _ Vote Follow Up S:\Council\City Clcrk\Proclamation!':\CAER FoodShare.doc PROCLAMATION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MARCH TO BE MINNESOTA FOODSHARE MONTH WHEREAS: Hunger exists in communities even in the best of economies: and WHEREAS: Nearly half of hungry ivfinnesotans are children twelve yea.r~ old and younger; and WHEREAS: 1ne fast(~st h'1:o\X..ring grOUP8 of hungry I\linnesotans are senior citizens; and WHEREAS: The creeping effects of hunger ill the life of an individual or family can r'mge from poor health and slo\ved recovery from injury and illness to poor performance at school and at \vork; and WHEREAS: The impact of this on lives and communitjes can be devastating; ;1nd WHEREAS: Food shelves in J\iinncsota distribute more than 42 n1illiol1 pounds of food annually to case the sting of hunger; and WHEREAS: Food shelf visits n~m,lins at record highs - more than 1.8 million visits in 2006; and W'HEREAS: The CAER Food Shelf in Elk River continue:'> to see a significant increase of those in need in our cotn,munity; and WHEREAS: TI)is is the 25th Anniversarv of the Tvfinnesot:<l l:i'oodShareI'vIarch Catnpnign; and WHEREAS: 'I'he success of the 1\1inn<:sota FoodShan~ r.hrch Campaign depends upon the participation of businesses, civic groups, schools, congregations, and individuals in every cot1ununity; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on behalf of the City Couneil, that we hereby proclaim the month of j\-farcb, 2007, to be Minnesota FoodShare Month in Elk River, and urge everyone in our co.mmunity to donate food items and/or funding to our local food shelf during :~{arch to ensure that all of our neighbors will have food enough to share fully in the life of our community.
