3.9. SR 04-16-2007 City of Elk River REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Agenda Section Meeting Date Consent A ril16, 2007 Item Description Notice of Street Department Retirement, Authorization to Hire Two Seasonal Laborers, and Extend Hours of Clerical Person Item Number 3.9. Prepared by Phil Hals, Street Su erintendent Reviewed by Lori Johnson, City Administrator Introduction On Apri127, 2007, Jerry Mackedanz will be retiring from the Elk River Street Department. Jerry Mackedanz has worked for the Street Department for 13 years. Prior to working for the City, Jerry retired from the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Discussion Jerry' s part-time schedule is 27 hours per week. At this time, I would like to hire two seasonal laborers to assist with the busy summer months while I evaluate the long-term needs of the department. The seasonal laborers will each work 40 hours per week at $9.50 per hour for four months. As an additional item, we have a shortage of staff hours for sign making. I would like to increase Connie Schwecke's hours by four hours per week in 2007 to accommodate our sign making needs. Financial Impact Use the remaining wages budgeted for Jerry Mackedanz for the balance of 2007, which amounts to $19,980, to hire two seasonal laborers and add 4 hours per week for Connie Schwecke. The total cost for these suggested changes will be less than $16,000. Attachments None. Action Requested The City would like to thank Jerry for his many years of dedicated service. A plaque will be presented at a future Council meeting in recognition of his service to the City. The Council is requested to authorize hiring two seasonal laborers and to tempotari1y increase Connie Schwecke's hours by four per week for the rest of 2007.
