DATE: August 15, 1944 We are happy to announce that The 2001 Committee, Inc. is planning its next conference for Saturday, October 1, 1994 at the Riverwood Conference Center. The topic this time is community values, and you will please find attached a more complete explanation of the conference and its budget. In the past, the City Of Elk River has been an active supporter ofthese conferences. Since The 2001 Committee has always been action oriented, these events have resulted in some long term benefits for the area. The association of the City with the conferences has been an immense help in achieving these accomplishments. . This year, we are requesting from the City Of Elk River an amount of $300 to help bring this conference to fruition. Your contribution and your continued support will be greatly appreciated. . . . . THE 2001 COMMITTEE, INe. THE 1994 CONFERENCE Saturday, October 1, 1994 THAT WAS THEN: A RATHERAMAZlNG RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS , Back in the mid 1980's, if you would have told the 2001 Committee about the future results of its conferences, they have found it hard to believe. After all, their purpose was to stimulate thought and help sort out some priorities for the area. But here is what happened. * The Citizens League was launched after the 1989 Conference. Organized to study issues over a longer term., the League has been involved in such concerns as a civic center . for Elk River, a recreational director for the area, a study on transportation issues, and currently the possible impact of modified school calendars on family life. . * The improvement of some park areas, and beautification along Highway 10. * The presence of young people on local boards and directorates. * The Three Rivers Community Foundation Organized after a conference on the subject, the Foundation has now developed to the point where it is able to make it first grants this year. * The Youth Task Force, as a result of the last conference The 2001 Committee was awarded a grant from the Central Minnesota Initiative Fund along with some local funding, and now the Task Force is developing an action plan to make this area a beller place for youth. THIS IS NOW: A CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY VALUES At every conference in the past, the question of values surfaced as a top priority. Even though the concept of community values may be nebulous, most agree that it gets to the heart of the matter, if we want to preserve and improve our healthy quality of life. As the area grows, we have also seen some confrontations in values. At the conference on October I, 1994, we want to discuss these questions: 1. What values should we preserve, and aspire to, as a community? 2. As the area develops, what are the best ways of promoting these values among ourselves? In order to help us out, we have solicited the help of two speakers. Don Fraser, former Representative in the U. S. Congress and Mayor of Minneapolis. Mr. Fraser spent a great deal of time and efron on the issues of families and children in both the House of Representatives and in Minneapolis. We hope to take advantage of his experience and thinking on these issues. Ted Bowman, Senior Trainer, Wilder Foundation, and Professor Mr. Bowman, in addition to working at Wilder, teaches Group Leadership at the University Of Minnesota and Family Studies at United Theological Seminary, New Brighton. He recently helped conduct a retteat for the Sherburne County Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Council. He has also assisted several communities process values, including the school districts of White Bear Lake, Eden Prairie and Wacania. . . . . THE CONFERENCE BUDGET The policy of The 2001 Committee, Inc. is to keep registration costs for participants at a minimum, to encourage increased and broad attendance.
