Council motion proclaiming May 11, 2007 as Poppy Day.
Background/Discussion
The American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign War requested the Council proclaim May 11,
2007, as Poppy Day.
The red poppy has been designated as a symbol of sacrifice of lives in all wars. The American Legion
Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign War have pledged to remind America annually of this debt through the
distribution of the memorial flower.

PROCLAMATION
PROCLAIMING MAY 11,2007
AS "POPPY DAY"
WHEREAS, America is the land of freedom, preserved and protected willingly and freely
by citizen soldiers; and
WHEREAS, Millions who have answered the call to arms have died on the field of batde;
and
WHEREAS, Our nation should be reminded of the price of war and the debt owed to
those who have died in war; and
WHEREAS, The red poppy has been designated as a symbol of sacrifice of lives in all
wars; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign War have pledged
to remind America annually of this debt through the distribution of the
memorial flower.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on behalf of the City Council, that I,
Stephanie Klinzing, Mayor of the City of Elk River, Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Friday,
the 11 ,h day of May, 2007, as POPPY DAY and ask that all citizens pay tribute to those who
have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy on
this day.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the
official seal of the City of Elk River, Minnesota this 7th day of May, 2007.
