SUBJECT: Post Office Update
As you know, the Postal Service has informed us that they are proceeding with expanding
operations in Elk River. At this time, those expansion plans include remodeling the existing
facility, leasing retail space, and selling the property located at Line Avenue and County Road
12. As part of this process, the Postal Service will hold a public meeting to inform residents
of the process and to get input on the project. Garry Mattox, the Postal Service Real Estate
Specialist serving this area, had originally intended to hold that public meeting as part of a
presentation at a City Council meeting; however, his travel schedule does not fit with
Council meeting dates in November. Instead, he will be holding a public meeting at 6:00
p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at the Elk River Library, 13020 Orono Parkway, to
discuss the process and allow the public to speak.
Attached is preliminary information from Mr. Mattox about this project. The Council is not
required to attend this meeting; however, a notice of quorum was prepared in case all five
Council members attend the meeting.

Dear Mayor Klinzing:
The Postal Service has determined that the present postal facility located at 560 3~d Street is
inadequate to serve the future postal needs of Elk River. We need to expand operations to
enhance both the quality of postal services we provide to your community and our
employees' working conditions. After consulting with the Elk River Postmaster, we find that
we need, ideally, approximately 2,065 square feet of interior retail space and 6,500 square
feet of carrier operation space.
To meet these new requirements, our first consideration is to expand the existing postal
facility. If this is not feasible, we will then consider keeping the existing building for our
carrier operation and finding an alternate quarter's facility remodeled to current Postal
specifications for our retail operation.
The Postal Service wishes to work in partnership with your community therefore, we ask
your assistance and cooperation in having this project scheduled for the next available town
meeting so that the general public may express its opinions and offer constructive
comments on the project
