MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Jeffrey A. Beahen, Chief of Police
DATE: December 10, 2007
SUBJECT: Out of State Conference
Sergeant Bryan Vita and Juvenile Detective Darren McKernan will be attending a national
juvenile conference in Washington DC December 9 through December 11. They will be
accompanied by Ricky Solomon, the Director of Operations for the Elk River Boys and
Girls Club.
The conference is being facilitated by the United States Bureau of Justice Assistance, and it is
titled "2007 Law Enforcement and Youth Partnerships for Crime Prevention Conference".
The goal of the conference includes inspiring participants to actively engage in collaborative
efforts that will strengthen relationships between youth and law enforcement and prevent
crime in local communities across America. Through a collaboration of federal agencies, law
enforcement officials, crime prevention groups, and local Boys and Girls Club leaders,
participants will receive training on how to engage youth in positive crime prevention
activities in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.
This is an excellent opportunity for our department to receive training from skilled
professionals and agencies in ways to deal with our juvenile crime issues. There is no cost to
the City for this trip. The trip is entirely funded by the Bureau of Justice.
The Boys and Girls Club of Elk River will receive a $20,000 grant from crime prevention
activities in Elk River, and hopefully will obtain an additional $20,000 for their Zimmerman
Club as well.
