Consider 2008 Park Dedication Budget: $50,000 for playground in Meadowvale Heights Park.
Background/Discussion
The Meadowvale Heights park master plan includes a playground area adjacent to the trail near 196th
Avenue. The trails were completed in 2006. People in the adjacent neighborhood (Oak Hill) have
requested that the playground be installed as soon as possible as there are many young children in the
neighborhood. In June 2007 the neighborhood presented a petition to the City Council and sent
postcards to staff requesting installation of a playground.
Residents in the neighborhoods surrounding Meadowvale Heights Park were invited to attend a
workshop after the July 11 Parks & Recreation Commission meeting. Staff provided large posters full of
various playground equipment and the parents and children were given colored dot stickers for them to
apply to the equipment they liked. They were also provided a map of the park and stickers to indicate
their preference as to where the playground would be located. There was a clear preference for a
playground to be located near the trail along 196`'' Avenue. Based on previous playground installations,
staff estimates a budget of $50,000 for this project.
Staff recommends a park dedication budget of $50,000 to install a playground in Meadowvale Heights
Park in 2008. The budget of $50,000 would cover the cost of the playground equipment, benches, picnic
table, concrete bench pads and concrete edging for the perimeter of the playground.
Financial Impact
$50,000 from the park dedication fund.
