SUBJECT: Gravel Operators Meeting
In November, 2007, I spoke at the City Council meeting regarding hours of operation for
gravel mining. I informed the Council that I would be scheduling a meeting with the local
gravel operators in December or January.
On January 15, 2008, staff including Jeremy Barnhart, Planning Manager, Nicki Blake-
Bxadley, Environmental Technician, and I met with the local gravel operators. During the
meeting several items were discussed such as hours of operation, noise, dust, traffic,
licensing/inspections and reclamation/phasing plans. The operators present included
Aggregate Industries, C.S. NlcCxossan, Midwest Asphalt, Plaisted Companies, Inc. and Tiller
Corporation. The meeting went very well.
The operators would like staff and Council to have residents call them directly when they
have a complaint. The resident should call them immediately so the operators can assess the
issue and determine what equipment ox operation is causing the complaint. When the
operators receive the complaint later in the day or the next day it is hard to determine what
the problem was. I have listed out who should be contacted at each gravel mine. I asked
that the operators also notify me when they receive complaints so we know what is being
done to resolve the problem.
The operators all agreed to provide the City with their phasing/reclamation plans to help in
die gravel mine study process. It was emphasized by the gravel miners that their plans are
dependent upon the market.
