Dear Sandy,
I am going to give you any and all information I can think of. Use whatever you need. The
summer after my sophomore year I went to a "camp" type week called Governor Scholar. it is run
by MAEF (Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation). The purpose of this week is for each
student, alone or in pairs, to develop and eventually carry out a community service project.! The
week is full of speakers and leadership developing activities as well as discussion about poSSible
project ideas. My friend Joe Robinson and I came away from this week with big plans. IVloSt
students do a single project, but Joe and I decided to incorporate many single projects withln a
larger one. We decided that there weren't many opportunities for kids to volunteer on a regular
basis at Elk River High School besides the National Honor Society. We wanted to make ourlgroup
as diverse as possible, which was something that was particularly stressed at Summer Institute.
We decided to impose few restrictions and didn't have any entrance requirements. The students
that want to get involved don't need to have a certain GPA or class rank or even any other
activities, they just have to have their heart in the right place, and that is wanting to benefit the
community. We called our group SERVE (Serving Elk River with Volunteer Enthusiasm) and started
out with about 13 members of a board of directors which would plan the projects and brains~torm
project ideas for the future. My title is officially Project Manager. I am in contact with the groups
that need our help. Joe is the President of the board of directors and runs our weekly board
meetings. We have expanded to about thirty members this year. Some projects that we have
been involved in have included: 728 Club Craft Bazaar, Relay for Life, March Food Drive for ICAER,
Arts in Harmony, Book Drive for the Boys and Girls Club, Gifts Anonymous, ArtSoup, Ramsey
Beautification Project, Special Olympics, Karaoke at the VA Hospital, teaching senior citizens about
computers and the internet at the Senior Center, Community Pancake Breakfast for victims iof
9/11, Daffodil Days and more. Our group actually won an award for our involvement in theIMarch
Food Drive for CAER from the Minnesota Food Share Association. We were awarded the i
Outstanding Youth Volunteer Group of Minnesota for our work. :
Besides my work with SERVE, [ am heavily involved in singing throughout the communit~y. 1
am a member of Command Performance Girls Choir and have been stage manager for the I~ast two
years. Last year I received the Choir Girl of the Year award which was voted on by my fello~v choir
members. [ am also a cantor at St. Andrews Catholic Church and sing in PraySing the Word Youth
Choir. T sing the National Anthem at Elk River High School sporting events and have had thle
opportunity to sing at the State Soccer Tournament the past two years.
I am sure this is about all you ever wanted to know about me and more. Just use what you
see fit. Thank you for contacting me. [ am very honored to be recognized with this public
proclamation. Let me know when this will be taking place. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Lauren Sivula
