Would be worth your while to read James Lileks' Sunday article (3/10/02, page B3). Everyone is dealing with the
loss of people-sized public spaces and places. The trick is, of course, to have usable AND appropriate public
design. Seems that the communities that are experiencng some sucess are the ones that simply insist that new
building designs meet the standards of local materials, local historical reference, flexability and variety. Certainly
not Elk River's program to this point, but we can redeem ourselves with the old downtown and in future
development.
