Request to attend National Planning Conference
Overview
Each year the American Planning Association (APA) organizes a national conference for
planning professionals, elected and appointed officials and interested citizens. The
conference offers a wide variety of workshops covering various planning issues. This year's
conference, to be held April 13-17, 2002 in Chicago, includes workshops covering:
· Downtown Development
· Commuter and Light Rail Planning
· Transit Oriented Developments
· Legal Issues
· Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
· Urban Design and Cluster Development
· Transportation Planning
· Sustainable Development and Sprawl
The 2002 Planning Department budget programmed expenses to cover attendance for one
staff person, typically the Director of Planning, at the national conference. For 2002, staff
requests that the Senior Planner be granted permission to attend the conference. The
Planning Commission budget included expenses for two Planning Commissioners to attend
the national conference, as there are specific workshops geared towards Planning
Commissioners. In the past the Council has approved sending staff and two Planning
Commission members to the same conference.
Request
The City Council is asked to approve sending the Senior Planner and two Planning
Commission members to the National Planning Conference to be held April 13-17, 2000 in
Chicago.
