Planning Commission Applicant Interviews
Interview Planning Commission applicants and appoint an applicant to fill one position
on the Planning Commission.
Analysis
Mike Chambers, whose term will expire on February 28, 2001, has elected not to
request reappointment. This leaves one vacancy on the Commission to be filled.
Four applications were received (attached). The following table summarizes the
information on the applications:

The applicants are scheduled to be interviewed separately in ten (10) minute intervals.
The interview order is as in the table above.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council interview the above candidates; they have been
invited to attend the February 20, 2001 meeting.
Staff recommends that the City Council appoint one candidate to fill the current vacant
position.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST:
I am deeply interested in an appointment to the Planning Commission because I want to be a part of
implementing responsible growth in Elk River.
()ur city is changing and growing rapidly and we must stay ahead of the curve and manage it
responsibly. If we are to grow responsibly we must all understand and agree to the definition of
"responsible" and then understand to whom we are responsible. We need a clearly defined planning
vision for our city that includes the foresight to anticipate amenities, infrastructure, and traffic flow. We
must equip the city with the proper tools needed to enforce that vision. Tools such as much needed
ordinances that can help preserve Elk Rive~s beauty while still allowing citizens and developers to
exercise their property rights. I want to be part of a Planning Commission that promotes hstening to
citizens and understanding the need to grow within the existing community - not despite it. This would
require some new processes and practices that allow citizen input earlier in the planning cycle. I want to
be part of the definition, planning, development and implementation of a vision for our city that
embodies the term "responsible growth".
EDUC, ATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
I have eighteen years of successful Marketing, Product Development, and Sales experience with
manufacturers of products used in industrial and commercial building environments. Currently I lead a
team of seven product managers responsible for defining new products for a manufacturer based in
Anoka. My educational background includes a BS in Engineering from the University of Illinois with a
minor in Marketing.
The skills I would bring to the Planning Commission are leadership/management skills to help define a
vision (or analyze the current one) and develop plans and implement tactics to promote responsible
growth.
CIVIC AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES:
I am dedicated to my family first (married with three small children), my employer second and to other
activities to which I can commit my time as available. I am involved in church activities at St. Andrews
and the Knights of Columbus. The Planning Commission appointment would be a first for me in terms
of community involvement but one to which I could devote appropriate time and effort.
