5.2. SR 05-05-2008REQUEST FOR ACTION To Item Number Ci Council 5.2. Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by Administration Ma 5, 2008 Tina Allard, Ci Clerk Item Description Reviewed by Direction for Future Cable Channel Needs Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator Reviewed by Action Requested CouncIl feedback on what direction you would like to see fox the cable channel: whether it would be hiring another part-time employee as we have done in the past or outsourcing wank. BackgroundlDiscussion Staff would like direction on addressing Cable Department needs with the Assistant Government Cable Producer position now open. Options include: Authorx~e adver2i.ring for the j~art-time Ar~artant Government Cable Producer This option would provide the city with two employees who could fill in fox each other with taping of city meetings when someone is sick ox on vacation. It would allow the employees to work together on the creation of video packages fox in-house productions such as Fire Chief's Corner ox the promotion of community events. It also helps to have staff that can establish working relationships in the community. 2. Consader outride contractor to tape meetings This option would outsouxce the taping of all city meetings. They would not provide any videc production services. The channels productions and community events programming would be limited with one full-time employee. 3. Consider outride contractor to provide some form of video services, whether at be partial services such as taping community events and productions for completion by current staff or providing completed productaons. ^ Productions and community events could be taped by a contractor and then given to city staff to edit and create video packages. ^ Productions could be completely outsourced fox full video packages. These options may help to provide more productions fox the channel. The downside of this option is that we would have one employee who would do limited production work due to the time needed to tape and edit city meetings. We would not have a backup employee to fill in to tape meetings if this employee were sick or wanted to take a vacation. Other concerns include knowledge of the city and compatibility with city equipment. S:\AdrrwilsKation\Council RCA\Cable Commission\Dicection Asst Position.doc With the two outsourcing options there possibly will be concerns we may need to work through with having an outside contractor using city equipment that is paid for by cable cotnnvssion funds. Financial Impact It is uncertain what the cost of services would be for the two outsourcing options.
