SUBJECT: Heritage Festival Committee Update
On July 24, 1995, the City Council adopted a resolution authorizing
and confirming the creation of a citizen heritage planning
committee. Since that time the Heritage Festival Committee has met
several times. The goal of the committee is to organize a festival to
celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the first trading
post at the site of the Elk River by David Faribault during the year
1846. The mission statement for event is "To celebrate the history and
heritage of Elk River and to preserve its identity and pride."
The one drawback to organizing an event of this magnitude has been
lack of community involvement. At this time there are about 10-12
committee members meeting on a consistent basis. I will be placing
an article in "The Current" about the event in hopes of getting
citizens interested and involved.
Plans are moving ahead. The dates for the event have been set for
August 10 and 11. Sub-committees have been formed to plan the
following events.
· A parade with the theme "Early Trapping and Trading 1846."
· A Trading Post where people will be able to trade goods with no
exchange of money. The committee's objective also involves
getting the Elk River retailers excited about participating in a
city-wide sidewalk sale and ethnic food fair.
· Historical tours to reveal historical sites in Elk River.
· Photo Shoot. This event is in the early planning stages so I am
not sure what it will entail at this point.
The next committee meeting is scheduled for February. I will
continue to update the council on the progress of this event.
