Scott Powell, owner of Elk River Ford, is requesting an ordinance amendment to allow menu boards fox
their car wash as a way to advise car wash options to clients. Car washes often use a sign similar to a
menu board. This request is in lieu of a variance.
Summary
The ordinance, (Sec. 30-1024-c-(2)-g) permits a menu board per drive-up or avalk-up lane of a drive in restaurant
up to a maximum of 32 square feet. [Emphasis added]. Because the business is not a restaurant,
technically, a menu board is not permitted. The applicant is requesting an ordinance amendment that
would permit a menu board:
g. One on-premise menu board per drive-up or walk-up lane of a drive-in restaurant or car
wash up to a maximum of 32 square feet each. Menu boards are allowed to have a message on
one side only and c-an-mav not contain an advertising message.
Planning Commission Discussion
The Planning Commission discussed the proposed text amendment at their meeting on June 10, 2008.
The Commission changed the language, restricting menu boards to restaurants or car washes, from the
originally proposed businesses. Staff supports the change.
Public Comment
Steve Rohlf, Elk River Ford, described the need for the signage. There is no minimum setback for menu
boards.

Approval of a formal ordinance that permits menu boards for non restaurant businesses.
Background/Discussion
Elk River Ford received approval to construct a car wash in 2006. The car wash was recently completed, and is
operational. As a way to advise car wash options to it's clients, car washes often use a sign similar to a menu board.
The ordinance, (Sec. 30-1024-c-(2)-g) pernuts a menu board per drive-up or avalk-up lane of a drive in restaurant up to a
maximum of 32 square feet. [Emphasis added]. Because the business is not a restaurant, technically, a menu board
