1. Consider authorization of outdoor plaza addition to Library.
2. Authorize contracting with Steve's Elk River Nursery for a total of $9,519 and authorize the
purchase of four sets of tables and chairs for approximately $2,000.
Background/Discussion
At the September 17, 2007 City Council meeting, Council authorized staff to develop cost estimates and
preliminary design for a screen porch for the Elk River Library. At the May 27, 2008 Library Board
meeting, the Board reviewed three alternatives. Two alternatives were variations of an enclosed screen
porch on the north side of the building. The third alternative was a landscaped seating area near the
entrance of the library. The Library Board had several concerns with the porch design and location. The
consensus was that the seasonal porch would obscure views of Lake Orono from the fireplace seating
area. The front patio seating area was viewed as a less expensive, more aesthetically pleasing alternative.
The Board voted unanimously to recommend the construction of a landscaped outdoor seating area.
Three quotes were obtained:
Rum River Tree Farm and Nursery $12,157
E.G.G.S. Landscaping, Inc. $10,839
Steve's Elk River Nursery $ 9,519
Staff is recommending contracting with Steve's Elk River Nursery for a total of $9,519 and the purchase
of four sets of tables and chairs totaling approximately $2,000.
Financial Impact
Total - $11,519.
The library construction contingency fund has a sufficient balance to fund this addition to the project.
